Robert Griffin III had a generational NFL career as a quarterback cut short by devastating knee injuries before he could fulfill his potential as a futuristic dual-threat signal caller.

He’s been successful in retirement as a media personality and often controversial podcaster, willing to exchange tweets and X videos with anyone who infringes upon his media space. He’s used his interracial marriage to Estonian wife Grete to diversify his audience and address racial issues that bring him high engagement on social media.
RG3 Trying To Re-live His NFL Glory Years With Flag Football?
All of the bravado you see from RG3 in that space has a lot to do with the fact that he didn’t get to go out on his terms and, though well-adjusted, his life is undoubtedly a nightmare of what if playing over and over again.
That’s why it’s not surprising that even though it’s been five years since he last suited up for the Washington Commanders, the organization still claims him as its own and is promoting his return to football, as the Baylor alum and 2011 Heisman Trophy winner suits up for 2026 Team USA flag football tryouts.
Despite being six years removed from his last year in the NFL, Griffin received a tryout invitation from USA Football. The Commanders posted stills from his first day on the scene, watching their former signal caller flex his skills at age 36.
Can RG3 Make 2026 Team USA Flag Football Team?
The 2026 Team USA flag football team is looking to finalize its roster before heading to Germany for the world championships. Griffin has a chance to impress the squad and potentially make the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, which will host flag football for the first time at the competition.
Griffin’s history is well documented. He was Washington’s No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and had some brilliant moments that were overshadowed by his injury-plagued career. He finished with 9,271 passing yards, 43 touchdowns and 30 interceptions along with 1,809 rushing yards with 10 more scores on the ground.
Griffin never made an official retirement announcement, he gracefully transitioned behind the microphone, signing with ESPN in 2021 and is currently with Fox Sports and hosts the “Outta Pocket” podcast with his wife on his YouTube channel.
Fans React To RG3 2028 Olympic Flag Football Journey
The exploits of RG3 seem like centuries ago to some fans and others can’t unsee his shock media journey to understand why his return to football is beyond newsworthy. And a reason to get excited.
“What are the Betting Odds for him tearing an ACL?” said one insensitive fan on X.
”Who’s that? He doesn’t play or represent@Commanders!”
“Remember he talked so much about the franchise that he was even writing a book. That dude is a bum and is selfish,” said another fan with a long memory.

“Bro literally has zero agility, only straight line speed lol this is hilarious,” barked one user.
“Wasn’t he about to write a book about how much he hate us? wtf is is this post,” a user asked.
“Why the f-k would we care what he’s doing. Not part of our franchise legacy,” another commented.
There’s A Group Of Fans That Would Love To See RG3 Back On The Football Field
With all of the bad blood, some fans just can’t forget how RG3 once electrified the D.C. area and owned the city.
“I see I’ll be the oddball out of the bunch but he was the main reason i became a redskins fan and during his time here, he was special good to see him balling again,” one supportive fan said.
They can only hope that the podcaster can muster up one last burst and at the very least, if he can maneuver himself into serious consideration against what is sure to be a talented group of much younger quarterbacks with experience in the sport, then it will be another boost for his brand.
Griffin Was Once Set To Release Tell-All Book Disparaging The Franchise
Back in 2021, Griffin was set to release a book detailing how it was playing for one of the most dysfunctional franchises in all of sports. From his injury misdiagnosis to his witnessing the sexual harassment around the franchise first-hand. And last but not least the power struggle between head coach Mike Shanahan and owner Daniel Snyder.
“I’m gonna tell you about what happened in the 2012 playoff game against Seattle,” he wrote then. “I’m going to detail the medical mismanagement that I received during my tenure in Washington. I’m going to open your eyes to the sexual harassment that permeated the walls of the building, and give you a deep dive into a power struggle between one of the most powerful coaches in all of sports.”
The book was never released, and while the franchise has forgiven him, some fans have not. So they won’t be supporting his latest venture into flag football.
