Mayweather vs. Logan Paul | Can The Retired Boxing Icon Become The World’s Greatest Entertainer?

Despite the Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder trilogy fight and the Errol Spence vs Manny Pacquiao title fight being announced last weekend, the Floyd Mayweather vs. Logan Paul exhibition match in two weeks remains the most highly anticipated boxing fight of the summer.

The fight got even more buzz just a few weeks ago when Mayweather and Paul’s younger brother and fellow YouTube star, Jake Paul, nearly got into a real scuffle during the official press conference at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami to announce the fight.

The near scuffle sent the internet on fire as Mayweather, now sporting some hair on the top of his head at 44 after being bald most of his legendary boxing career, turned into an instant meme.

Nothing about that shit was scripted; I’m telling you that dude was just super lucky for a couple of reasons,” Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions said. “One, Floyd has a professional team around him, and they listened and followed great instructions and my instructions to them were to not hurt him because things wouldn’t have turned out the way they did. I’m just glad everyone got out of there safe and unscathed and that we are going to have a huge event on June 6th.”

Many boxing purists are up in arms and disgusted that the man who is one of the best to ever lace up a pair of gloves and was once the face of the sport would fight a YouTube star for money on pay-per-view.

On the other hand, there are many people are who looking forward to watching Mayweather the entertainer do his thing.

“Floyd’s boxing career is over, he’s retired, and he retired undefeated after fighting more world champions and beating more world champions than anyone in the history of the sport and his legacy is already cemented,” Ellerbe said. “This right here is entertainment as there is a tremendous demand for this exhibition fight, and we are going to give it to the fans all over the world.

Believe it or not, the Mayweather vs. Paul card has some legitimately competitive fights – highlighted by the rematch of Mayweather Promotions star, Badou Jack, a two-division world champion against Canadian boxing sensation Jean Pascal for Pascal’s WBA light heavyweight title. Their first fight in December 2019 was a “Fight of The Year” candidate many ringside observers scored for Jack, who lost his title via controversial decision.

With the rematch on the horizon, Jack is focused on doing whatever he has to do to get the revenge that has been brewing inside of him for the last 18 months.

“To be honest I don’t really care about the belt, I just want to get my win that I supposed to have in my last fight,” Jack said. “Getting a belt to win the fight is a bonus because I’m just here to win.”

After Jake Paul did a reported 1.2 million PPV buys in his victory of MMA legend Ben Askren in April, many people are expecting the Mayweather vs. Paul to cross over a million buys as well.

Regardless of what side of the boxing fence you reside on, Mayweather, Paul, and their teams are betting that more people are interested in their exhibition fight for entertainment than a competitive world championship title fight in Vegas.
