Nets’ GM Reveals Why Kevin Durant Signed With Brooklyn

NBA free agency this past June was absolutely insane, and the three biggest names in the game drove fans crazy for months over speculation about where they would end up.

Basically all of the “experts”, and aspiring media personalities, had it wrong across the board, starting with Kevin Durant and ending with Kawhi Leonard.

When Durant and Irving tipped off that free agency Sunday by announcing that they were headed to Brooklyn, the internet exploded. Nets fans rejoiced while Knicks fans went ballistic over another missed All Star opportunity. But why did Durant sign with Brooklyn? Was it because of Irving? Did he fall victim to the allure of Brooklyn over Manhattan?

The Nets’ GM, Sean Marks, finally let everyone know why it all went down in an interview with WFAN in New York.

According to Marks, Durant told him: “I love the system. I love how you guys play. I see how hard you guys play….You were never out of games. We could never take you guys lightly.”

Marks went on to tell the hosts that he didn’t even know Durant was coming to Brooklyn until KD announced it on IG.

“What we knew was we were either getting a teleconference call with Kevin that night or we were going to potentially get a meeting,” said Marks. “We’d seen some media reports earlier in the day that Kevin had crossed several teams off his list and we were still one of them (being considered). And those reports were there for everybody to read. And when Kevin posted it on The Boardroom Instagram site, that was news to all of us in the office.”

While Nets’ fans will have to wait for Durant to heal up before they see him play for Brooklyn, the fact is that the Nets have a bright future, one that will be even brighter once KD hits the floor at Barclays.
