Why Mayweather’s Foray Into MMA Should Be Taken Seriously

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. seems very intent on testing himself in the mixed martial arts world and recently revealed that he is in the process of obtaining his professional MMA fighter’s license.

Mayweather told TMZ that he plans on applying for the license which would allow him to be a professional combatant in MMA with the goal being to enter the UFC’s hallowed Octagon.

Floyd Mayweather’s Applying for MMA License, Wants 6-8 Months to Train

Floyd Mayweather told us he’s dead serious about fighting in the UFC — and now, he says he’s taking the most important step to make sure that happens … getting a license.

“Everything takes time, said Mayweather to TMZ, “eventually we’re going to apply for the license, and hopefully we can fight.”

The Grand Rapids, Michigan native turned Las Vegas’ super resident will probably file for the license in Nevada where he has spent the majority of his combat career and literally uplifted the economy of the city of Las Vegas ever since his blockbuster fight against Zab Judah in 2006 and Oscar de la Hoya back in 2007 where he took a split decision.

According to Las Vegas sports betting organization, Westgate SuperBook, Conor McGregor is the -$1,000 favorite as of yesterday with Mayweather opening as a +650 underdog. The sportsbook mandates that the fight must be in mixed martial arts and take place before September 1, 2019. Mayweather and McGregor has not been booked as his first matchup but the world is clamoring to see McGregor get a shot at retribution in his natural fighting arena.

With odds like that, it is no wonder why Mayweather wants to fight in the cage as the mismatch creates the same level of intrigue based on Mayweather’s supreme confidence in his abilities in a sport that he has never competed in. Mayweather’s boxing career is now officially over, however, the allure of a huge payday and remaining one of the most talked about athletes of our generation seems like motivation for a fight that many believe he would not be prepared for.

After enlisting UFC welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley as his coach, Mayweather is leaving nothing up to chance as he prepares for what might truly be the biggest fight of his life
