Floyd Mayweather has been keeping himself busy these days with everything except boxing.
While the world is buzzing over the possibility of Mayweather actually strapping on MMA gloves and fighting in the UFC, Mayweather has been busy co-promoting fights like Danny Garcia’s victory over Brandon Rios and his adult entertainment venue, Girls Collection.
He also surprised fans when he announced his step into the video game world via social media. Fans went crazy because for years boxing’s diehards have clamored for a return of EA Sports’ popular Fight Night gaming franchise with no word on a return from EA Sports. Hopes were high that Mayweather might revamp the franchise and tie it to his name for a legendary mix of hype and a great competitive experience.
However, recently, Mayweather gave a preview of the game dubbed “Mayweather Boxing Fitness” which is a virtual reality game focused on being physically active via a hands-free approach that encourages movement as the primary activity driver. This is a departure from the expectation of the fans who might be light MMA fans but are green with envy over the evolving UFC video game franchise.

EA Sports’ Fight Night 2004 is a boxing video game that featured Roy Jones Jr on the cover. It is the successor to EA’s previous boxing series, Knockout Kings. Four sequels followed, Fight Night Round 2 in 2005, Fight Night Round 3 in 2006, Fight Night Round 4 in 2009 and Fight Night Champion in 2011. Chief among the game’s features are a career mode, in-depth and reasonably realistic fighting and an analog stick-based control scheme dubbed Total Punch Control, which was re-used, with enhancements, in the sequels.

The reactions from fans were swift with many not appreciating Mayweather’s first foray into the branded video game world coming from a point of fitness as opposed to competition based simulated present-day athletes battling for a title. Not much detail is available regarding the game, who is developing it or release date but one thing is for sure it is not for those competitive game nights a la NBA 2K or Madden infamy.
However, with the release of his The Money Team “TMT” branded watch line with Hublot, Mayweather is definitely cashing in on his brand potential in retirement.
