What We Learned From NFL Week 2

Patrick Mahomes stole the spotlight this weekend and he put his latest Killshot on Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the Chiefs 42-37 win over the Steelersthe first win for Kansas City in Pittsburgh since 1986Mahomes threw six touchdown passes and no interceptions. That gives him 10 TDs and no picks in his first two starts. Mahomes is 2-0 and Kansas City has dropped 80 points on the Chargers and Steelers. The 23-year-old signal caller is officially the latest quarterback sensation in the NFL.

With all due respect to Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is in a Dan Marino zone that he cant possibly sustain, the young Mahomes is the talk of the NFL. He is the total package with a cannon of an arm that can be attributed to his dad Pat Mahomes, an 11-year MLB veteran, who honed Patricks skills on the baseball field as well. Former MLB pitcher LaTroy Hawkins is his godfather and they are also his biggest fans.

Its just crazy, his father Pat Mahomes told Peter King of NBCs Football Morning in America. Watching him, hes so calm. The thing thats funny to me is he really doesnt realize what he just did. He went into Pittsburgh, where theyve won more Super Bowls than any team in history, and he won. He really doesnt think about that stuff. He doesnt think about being in Heinz Field playing [Ben] Roethlisberger. He just goes and plays football.

Under the tutelage of Andy Reid and a coffer of weapons at his disposal, Mahomes is performing with the skill and poise of a veteran, but with the speed and enthusiasm of a rookie. Thats a dangerous combination because he still has so much to learn.

Pat Mahomes II reminds me of how his dad was a pitcher. Hard nosed, gritty and a flamethrower. @PatrickMahomes5

Whats happened speaks to coach [Andy] Reid and everything hes taught me in the last year, the  Kansas City QB said.  Hes prepared me to go out and play fast. In this system, if you can play fast, you can take advantage of things against the defense. And the talent and the legends I have around meIm just really trying to get the ball out of my hands and into these playmakers hands.

Every NFL season a new hotshot QB steals the spotlight and the headlines.  In 2011 it was Cam Newton. In 2012 it was RG3. In 2014 it was Teddy Bridgewater.  In 2015 it was Jameis. In 2016 it was Carson Wentz. Last season Mahomes was the second quarterback drafted but had to sit behind Alex Smith and watch fellow-rookie Deshaun Watson captivate the NFL for seven scintillating games.

Bill Maas on if there’s a comp for #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: “John Elway. He had the legs, mobility and the arm and that’s what I’ve seen out of Pat Mahomes so far… Lot of great things happen when you have those combinations.” #TheDrive

Now, Patrick Mahomes is the next transcending dual-threat, ready to push the QB position to new heights. Only time will tell if Mahomes is the real deal, but it will be ball watching him execute his surgery while slicing up elite NFL defenses.
