The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug Smokes Box Office Competition

The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug came out the gate with a whopping $73 million in ticket sales in its debut weekend with the animated film Frozen coming in second with $22 million in its fourth week. Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas finished with $16 million at the box office over the weekend as well while The Hunger Games: Catching Fire appears to be losing steam after a big time debut. It finished with $13 million in box office revenue. The Best Man Holiday fell from the top ten films and landed in 12th place overall with $1 million.  In its ninth week at the box office, the critically acclaimed 12 Years a Slave finished in 16th place with nearly $700,000 in receipts.  Below is a complete listing of the nation's top ten films.
