The Course At The Open Is Clownin’ The Field, But Tiger Woods Still Has A Strong Round

The links golf courses that host the Open Championship each year are notoriously known for tough fairways and troublesome pot bunkers, but some golfers were salty over some pin locations on Muirfield, this year’s course.

Right now, Zach Johnson leads the pack with -5. Tiger Woods navigated the tricky pins to finish his first round tied for 9th alongside Phil Mickelson and several others at -2. Tiger had some trouble on the front nine, but got hot on the back nine with four birdies and only one bogey. Though Woods understood Poulter's complaints with the pins, his main concern was with the greens.

“It’s just frightening how fast it got,” he said to ESPN's Tom Rinaldi. “It was tough. It was a round where I had to grind out.”

Woods will continue to scheme for the No. 1 spot when he tees off tomorrow at 4:44 a.m.
