Serena Williams loses bid for Grand Slam history

After defeating sister Venus Williams earlier in the week, Serena was just two wins away from history.

After a rain delay pushed her semi-finals match against Italy’s Roberta Vinci to today, fans couldn’t wait to watch her take another step towards history. Unfortunately, that quest ended today in the third set as Vinci defeated Serena Williams 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Vinci improves to 1-4 against Williams and advances to her first first appearance in a Grand Slam championship in singles competition. She will face Italian counterpart Flavia Pennetta, who defeated Simona Halep earlier on Friday.
