It looks like Oprah’s OWN television network is already jumping ahead of the game as far as purchasing rights are concerned. In a story first broke by the Hollywood Reporter, the Oprah Winfrey Network has acquired the network television rights to The Weinstein Company’s Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom for broadcasting in 2017.
"We couldn't be more honored to showcase this powerful film to the OWN viewers," said Erik Logan, president of OWN. "Nelson Mandela was Oprah's hero, and ultimately, the inspiration behind Oprah's school in South Africa. His story of forgiveness and redemption is a gift not only to the people he touched, but to the world."
The film stars Indris Elba as Mandela while actress Naomie Harris performs masterfully as Winnie. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom has also earned Elba a Golden Globe nomination for Best Male Actor.
