Ten years ago, The Dark Knight hit the big screen and Gotham City was never the same.
Produced, directed and co-written by Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight stars Christian Bale as Gotham’s protector and its billionaire playboy. And while Bale embodied both personalities many feel that the spotlight was stolen by the deceased Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker, who took the sadistic clown’s reputation to new heights. The film is considered by many to be Ledger’s magnum opus, who played the Joker to critical acclaim but died of an accidental overdose months before the film opened.

Rounding out the all-star cast were Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, and Morgan Freeman. The Dark Knight is the most Batman-esque Batman film to ever hit the big screen, completely blowing all prior and subsequent renditions out of the water. At the beginning of the film, police Lieutenant James Gordon (Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Eckhart) form a highly-publicized alliance to dismantle organized crime in Gotham City, but are teased and taunted by the Joker — who commits heinous acts of calamity and destruction for the sake of wanting to.
The Joker is simply trying to undermine Batman’s influence over the people of Gotham as well as create confusion so that the citizens come to the realization that even Batman can’t save their city. Much of the inspiration for the film came from the classic 1988 graphic novel “The Killing Joke,” which is celebrated not only for the artwork but for the writing as well.

Unlike other American made superhero films that are filmed in American-looking cities overseas, The Dark Knight was shot in Chicago. The powerful reviews celebrated the visual effects, score, fight sequences, direction and acting, causing some critics to name The Dark Knight as one of their films of the year in several tallies.
It earned over $1 billion worldwide, became the highest-grossing film of 2008 and is the 35th highest-grossing film of all time. Another incredible feat for the film was that it was a superhero movie that was nominated for eight Academy Award nominations, winning the award for Best Sound Editing. Ledger was posthumously awarded Best Supporting Actor.

He is known by many names; the Batman, The Caped Crusader, The Dark Knight. But before this icon of American comic book illustration was created by Bob Cane 75 years ago this week in 1939, the ideal male superhero was a somewhat clich even at such an early juncture in the genre’s history.
For remaining true to the original subject matter, for incredible acting and for being the best movie ever adapted from the rich source material at DC Comics, although Wonder Woman had a robust argument for that title now, The Dark Knight is clearly one of the best superhero movies of all-time.
