Naomi Osaka reportedly is set to sign a big new contract with Adidas after her first major tournament win against Serena Williams.

The Times reports her contract renewal with the brand is worth approximately $8.5 million. The half-Haitian, half-Japanese tennis player has been on the rise for some time, but winning the US Open at the age of 20 has set her towards a new level of stardom. Although her parents had her represent Japan for non-financial reasons, it definitely proved to be an important decision for many reasons, even financially.
We made the decision that Naomi would represent Japan at an early age, Osakas parents said in an email to WSJ. She was born in Osaka and was brought up in a household of Japanese and Haitian culture. Quite simply, Naomi and her sister Mari have always felt Japanese so that was our only rationale. It was never a financially motivated decision nor were we ever swayed either way by any national federation.
Yahoo mentions how this contract will move her higher up on the Forbes’ highest paid female athlete list. She’ll still trail Serena, which isn’t surprising at all. But, this contract renewal is only the beginning of this young talented player’s bright future.
