History was made in so many ways at the Women’s US Open Finals on Saturday evening.
For the second year in a row, two Black women took the court. One of them, Naomi Osaka, won her first Grand Slam title and became both the first Japanese woman and first Haitian woman to win the title. Her $3.8 million check, an increase of $100,000 from last year, was the highest in history. Her opponent, the GOAT Serena Williams, didn’t fare as well, as a dispute between her and chair umpire Carlos Ramos during the second set resulted in a verbal exchange, a point penalty, anger and, eventually, a full game penalty and a loss by Serena.
Today the penalties continued when it was announced that Serena was fined $17,000 for three code violations stemming from that Finals match-up.

After the match was over, Serena graciously congratulated her opponent and gave her the shine she deserved. But the drama wasn’t done yet, as the questions continued. Serena did what she always does, and answered it with the style that has made her the true champion that she is.

Serena Williams: “This is just an example for the next person that has emotions that wants to express themselves and want to be a strong woman, it didn’t work out for me today but it’s going to work out for the next person.” https://t.co/HYJv1ELzqE
The aftermath of that match continues.
