“I Think He’s The Only One To Have A Shot” | Shannon Sharpe Says Patrick Mahomes Is Only QB Who Could Eclipse Tom Brady As GOAT

The Kansas City Chiefs are 2-0 following Thursday’s thrilling 27-24 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. The team was led by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who passed for 235 yards and two touchdowns against an hellacious pass rush from former All-Pro edge rushers Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa. While Mahomes’ offensive line did their part limiting the Chargers to one sack, it was his manipulating of the pocket and escapability  that also helped contain the pass rush.

Mahomes has passed for 595 yards and seven touchdowns, with zero interceptions. He’s also completed 54 of 74 pass attempts for a 68 percent completion percentage. And he’s doing it without stalwart wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

On a recent episode of “Undisputed,” FS1 personality Shannon Sharpe sounded like someone who believes Mahomes’ career could rival Tom Brady’s when he’s done playing.

“I think he’s the only one to have a shot. I think what Tom has been able to do, because he’s had had such longevity, and because he’s played at such a high level for such a long time, it’s good, but once you start getting to the numbers with Tom forget the Super Bowls.”

Sharpe continued:

“When you look at the passing yardage, you look at the touchdowns, you got to play an extremely long time. Just go back in history and look at the guys that possessed the records. Fran Tarkenton. Fran played like 16 years. You look at Peyton Manning, 18 years, Drew Brees, 19-20 years. Tom Brady comes along, 23 years. Marino had the touchdown record, played 16 years. You got to play a long period of time.

“Guys are going to play longer. The question is will they be able to play as efficiently as Brady did, because think about what Mahomes’ numbers are in his first five years, first four years of starting, and compare them to Brady’s. With what Brady’s numbers were his first four years, you’ll see he’s so far ahead.”

Bold take by Sharpe, but he may be onto something. Mahomes has accomplished more in his first four seasons as the starter of the Chiefs than most QBs accomplish in their entire playing career.

Mahomes Has Accolades To Boot

Since becoming the Chiefs starter in 2018, Mahomes has won an MVP, Super Bowl MVP, Super Bowl, and two AFC titles. The Chiefs have hosted the AFC Championship each season he’s been the starter. His 60-18 record as a starter is amazing and includes an 8-3 playoff record.

While Sharpe is comparing Mahomes to Brady, two of Pat’s playoff losses are to Brady-led teams, once in the AFC Championship and once in the Super Bowl.

What Makes Mahomes So Different When Compared To Other QBs

Blessed with a rocket arm, above-average athleticism and the ability to process information, Mahomes has all the tools to succeed at a high level in the NFL. Early in his career he was said to have the athleticism of Randall Cunningham, the football IQ of Joe Montana and the leadership and arm strength of John Elway. Not a bad combination for anyone and Mahomes sure fits the bill.

What’s funny is when folks try to downplay how good he is because he has Andy Reid and Eric Bieniemy dialing up plays for him. While that may be true, the QB still has to execute the play, and “Mr. Ketchup On Errthang” does it at an extremely high level.
