Don’t Let The Samsung Ads Fool You: Rick Rubin Just Needed a Place To Crash

Remember the Samsung commercial for Jay-Z's upcoming July 4 album, Magna Carter Holy Ghost that featured Jay, Pharrell, Swizz Beatz, Timbaland and Rick Rubin? It was largely assumed that everyone in the ad also contributed to the album, but Rubin says that isn't quite the case.

From SoulCulture:

“The point of me being in the commercials was that he was filming a documentary and he asked me – I imagine he’s just comfortable talking to me – to come listen to the songs with him and just talk about the songs. Just listen to it and talk about it, and that’s what we did. It was fun."

Rubin said he wasn't in much of a place to come and help Jay after intense recording sessions for Kanye West's Yeezus. “I was in a very alternative and progressive headspace,” he says. “And Jay’s record is a more traditional hip-hop record.”
