On June 19th, 1984, NBA history was made. But if you were the Portland Trailblazers, you were on the wrong side of the history books.
With the first pick, the Houston Rockets selected All-World center, Hakeem Olajuwon, from the University of Houston. With the second pick, the Portland Trailblazers selected Sam Bowie from the University of Kentucky, followed by the Chicago Bulls who rejoiced as they selected Michael Jordan out of UNC, and the rest is history.
Well a reference to that very history has just surfaced, this time from the gridiron in South Carolina as Dabo Swinney, head coach of the National Champions Clemson Tigers football team, just compared Tigers’ quarterback Deshaun Watson to MJ.
Yes. That just happened.
Speaking with Pro Football Talk, Coach Dabo Swinney let his feelings be know on just how good his championship winning QB is:
Hes humble, the same guy every day, and always ready, Swinney said of Watson. He comes to every meeting prepared. Thats how you change things, you change the culture, through for me its through discipline and recruiting, staffing and all that stuff. For them, its decision-making, its who you pick. And Im just telling you: They pass on Deshaun Watson, theyre passing on Michael Jordan. I mean, I dont know what the heck Im talking about, Im just an old funky college coach, but Deshaun Watson is the best, by a long shot.
That’s a lot of pressure to put on the Cleveland Browns, a franchise that hasn’t had any luck with drafting quarterbacks since the days of Brian Sipe and Bernie Kosar. While many are starting to speculate as to what the Browns will do with that pick, with options ranging from trading it to taking Texas A&M pass rusher Myles Garrett, Dabo has just put it out there that the MJ of the draft is there for the taking.
But this time he’s wearing no.4 in orange and white.
