Cardinals expected to release RB Adrian Peterson today, per source. Peterson has a $750,000 bonus due on the third day of league year, Friday, so Arizona saves money. But Peterson still could return to Arizona later, per source.

Peterson joined the Cardinals via trade from the New Orleans Saints last season and rushed for 448 yards and two TDs. The old locomotive showed that he still had some steam left in his legs as he led an injury-riddled Cardinals backfield in rushing.

Peterson, who turns 33 on March 21, plans to continue playing.

He wasn’t anointed as Purple Jesus and The Comeback Kidfor nothing. Peterson returned from a career-threatening knee injury in 2012 to run his way into the NFL record books, survived a child abuse scandal and the league has been pushing him out the door ever since.

Last season, the former Minnesota Vikings legend had two games with at least 134 rushing yards, adding to his 12, 276 career rushing yards, which places AD 12th on the NFL’s all-time rushing list since entering the league in 2007.

NFL business is dirty politics and when it comes down to it, releasing Peterson saves the Cardinals about $3 million in cap space. He was due a $750,000 roster bonus on Friday that he most likely wont be seeing.

Expect to see him resurface with another team in need of a veteran pack who can pick up some yards in the trenches.
