Another NY Yankee Bites The Dust: Curtis Granderson Heads Back To DL

The New York Yankees haven't been fortunate enough to catch a break in 2013, but they have caught a few broken bones. In spite of these injuries, the Yanks have rolled to a 29-18 start and first-place in the AL East. On Friday night, Curtis Granderson caught his second bad break of the season in his eighth game back after a 38-game absence. The Yankees began this season and have played a bulk of it without Derek Jeter, A-Rod, Mark Teixeira, Michael Pineda, Phil Hughes and Granderson, last season's leading home run hitter.

After Granderson broke his pinkie after being hit by a pitch from Toronto Blue Jay J.A. Happ, he may miss at least another month of action.

Granderson was put on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, with outfielder Brennan Boesch called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Granderson remained in Friday's game and even advanced around the bases, scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Jayson Nix, but he did not come out to play the field in the bottom of the inning.

And while he was on the basepaths, Granderson clearly could be seen grimacing and flexing his left hand.

"I thought I was going to be OK,'' he said. "But once I got to third, it started hurting a little bit and I was thinking to myself, 'I'm going to have to make sure I can go ahead and squeeze a bat before I can go back out there.' And as the inning continued to prolong a little bit, it started to throb.''

X-rays taken at Tropicana Field revealed the fracture.

Granderson was examined by the Rays' team doctor but will return to New York to consult with Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser, the Yankees' hand specialist, who will determine if he needs surgery.

"As of right now, they said no,'' Granderson said of the possibility of surgery. "But I know they were waiting for one more X-ray to get another view of it, and they'll get a better understanding.''

Manager Joe Girardi said he did not know how long Granderson, who was reactivated on May 14, would be sidelined this time. Alex Rodriguez suffered a fracture of the same bone last July after being hit by a pitch from the Mariners' Felix Hernandez and missed 36 games.
