Andre 3000 Stars as Jimi Hendrix

Oscar-winning screenwriter John Ridley has been working to grind out a Jimi Hendrix biopic long before anyone ever heard of 12 Years a Slave. And now, he presents All Is By My Side. Starring Andre 3000, written and directed by Ridley, the film tracks Jimi’s early years with his band the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Unfortunately, thanks to the Hendrix estate’s deathly serious control of creative works, songs like “Hey Joe” and “Fox Lady” won’t be in the film.

Looking for “Purple Haze?” Sorry. The Hendrix family, led by Experience Hendrix LLC, has denied Ridley the use of any original music. And it’s a bit of a shame. Word is Andre is excellent in the role. And with Ridley’s recent Oscar win, this film just might have a chance to succeed. But the profitability and legitimacy of a Jimi Hendrix movie comes into question if it does not include any original music.

All Is By My Side has been acquired for U.S. distribution by Open Road and XLrator. Though no release date is in sight, it screens at the SXSW Film Festival which opens today.
