A Michonne Lead Walking Dead Series Is Too Good Of An Idea To Pass Up

The Walking Dead has been a monster hit for AMC for the past six years. However, it was reported yesterday that Andrew Lincoln, who played Rick Grimes, will be leaving after the season 9. The post-apocalyptic series.  This is an incredibly big deal considering that the character of Grimes is the leader of the haggard group of survivalists and is almost synonymous with the show itself. Insiders believe the show will switch from emphasizing one white male lead in Andrew Lincoln to another in Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl.  Last season Chandler Riggs, who played Carl Grimes from the show’s start, left the show and some believe this could affect ratings.

A narrative does matter and, at least to me, it appears as if the character of Michone would be an excellent lens through which to watch these characters struggle and change. Played by Danai Gurira, who is arguably the biggest star on the show now thanks to such blockbusters as “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity Wars“. Additionally, the image of her zombie killing katana and faux dreads are some of the most prominent imagery in the show.

Leadership, resiliency, loyalty, and love are the traits that she embodies on the show. Though race is never brought up on the show since the death of Merle very early on, Michonne’s mannerism and ideals are quintessentially black.  Making her perspective the primary POV of the show won’t change what the show is about, and fans might be pleasantly surprised at what a Michonne-led group of survivors would look like.
