Chadwick Boseman passed in 2020 after a long fight with colon cancer. The talented actor was just getting started on what was sure to be a Hall of Fame career.
Despite his physical absence, his legacy lives on and his final great work of art before his passing is forever cemented in motion picture lore, winning a best actor’s award for his performance Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
At the Golden Globes, this past Sunday, Boseman’s wife, Taylor Simone Ledward Boseman accepted the award for him.
In addition to listing the people Boseman would’ve thanked like director George C. Wolfe, producer Denzel Washington, and costar Viola Davis, said, “He would thank God,” she began. “He would thank his parents. He would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifice.” “He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice that tells you you can, that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you were meant to be doing at this moment in history,”
She concluded, “I don’t have his words, but we have to take all the moments to celebrate those we love, so thank you HFPA for this opportunity to do exactly that, and hun, you keep ’em coming.”
Boseman’s rise through the rank of elite actors, propelled by his starring role in the record-breaking film Black Panther, which once and for all proved the marketing power, appeal and excellence of all-Black casts in film — has reverberating effects on the Black actor market, where young brothers are steady being recognized for their on-screen brilliance.
