Released in 1998 just in time for the playoffs, the Jordan XIV had its share of iconic moments both on court and off. Designed by Tinker Hatfield, the XIV was designed in the likeness of one of MJ’s favorite hobbies, motorsports and more directly one of his favorite toys, the Ferrari 355. You can locate these inspirations in the iconic badge shaped logo, midsole side panels, and its race inspired, aerodynamic design lines. Besides being a very storied shoe, the XIV was equipped with a Zoom Air Ride, making it a very comfortable and functional performance basketball shoe.
For shoe lovers, the XIV was set to be one of the most sought after Jordans, as he announced his second retirement soon after winning his sixth championship. The shoe was to signify the end of an era, the last game shoe of the G.O.A.T. What was more impressive than the shoe itself, is the show MJ put on while wearing the XIV. The OG color has been referred to as the “Last Shots”–– as MJ was able to strip Karl Malone and hit Bryon Russell with one of the filthiest fakes ever. Set up at the top of the key, he hit a series-winning jumper, earning him 45 points and his 6th ring.
The Air Jordan XIV was released to the public in 1999 in several color ways only to be reintroduced into the market again in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2011. While other Jordan connoisseurs gravitate towards III’s, IV’s and XI’s, the XIV remains one of my favorites, as I was able to witness the greatest of my era handle his biz in these kicks.
