Do you know why Steph Curry is the real MVP? It’s not because he willed his team to four championships in eight years; this year, he won despite the critical slander of his parental units for their newfound love interests.
While Steph was making impossible threes, leaving it all on the line amid the shortcomings of some of his teammates, and bagging his first Finals MVP, the Twitterverse was shaming Sonya and Dell Curry’s romantic decision-making.
“I could be mad and be like, ‘Y’all effed this up.’ I could have that approach,” Steph said earlier this year to The Ringer. “But it’s going to be an acknowledgment of both of y’all in terms of how y’all raised me. The calmness I have in myself is because of y’all.”

“I don’t care what type of human being you are, people bad-mouthing your mom and dad and all that stuff going on, it’s got to have kind of a negative effect upon your personality,” Charles Barkley said on “First Take” the day after the Warriors championship win.
“I think that was just such a great release that he can actually play basketball and win a championship, because I will always love his mom and dad, but all that stuff that’s been going on behind the scenes, it had to put a tremendous amount of stress on him.”
After 30 years of marriage, the Currys, who produced basketball royalty, are calling it quits publicly.
Dell and Sonya became the Currys in 1988 and had their basketball-shooting prodigy son, Steph, the same year. The couple welcomed their second future NBA star, Seth, in 1990 and a daughter named Sydel Curry, four years later.
Death Of A Dynasty
The Currys legally separated in 2020; however, it did not stop Dell from accusing Sonya of cheating on him with Steven Johnson, a white man, in 2021. Johnson reportedly is a former NFL player who entered the league during the 1988 draft as a sixth-round pick.
Dell attempted to block alimony payments, claiming Sonya was living with her new beau at his home in Tennessee. Past court documents saw Dell claiming that Sonya “began her extramarital affair with Mr. Johnson during the marriage and before the date of separation, and she lied to [Dell] each time she cheated on him.”
However, in corresponding documents, Sonya stated that Dell’s hypothesis was false and that she was not living with Johnson at the time. She revealed that she was living independently due to Dell not allowing her to live at the home they used to share.
Sonya’s Story
Although Sonya reportedly admitted that she was in a relationship, claiming it began “months after,” she and Dell agreed to separate in March 2020 legally, in the court docs.
Then Mama Curry took it further, saying Dell was messy and cheated on her during the marriage and with different women, reportedly with family and close friends knowing all about it.
Then there were the game appearances with their respective boo thangs during the Finals and the subsequent tongue-wagging about both parents’ choices.
The Last Laugh
Once the internet began buzzing that each was dating a member of a formerly married couple, you couldn’t stop the jokes from flowing.
However, Steph Curry has had the last laugh. He took out the Boston Celtics in six and walked off with his first Finals MVP. No KD, half a Draymond Green, and a Klay Thompson who returned from an injury.
Steph solidified his place in NBA history, now the world has to adjust to the new Curry family reality.
