The acquisition of Wes Welker was a big deal for the Broncos, adding another valuable weapon to a Denver pass offence that looks poised to do some real work next season. But the switch might have been a bigger deal for Wes Welker, who sounds like a free man talking about his prison bid when referring to his time with Bill Belichick and the Patriots.
From Sports Illustrated:
“It was just kind of hard,” Welker told Chris Ballard, “one of those deals where you have to endure him, put up with him. … But he does it to everybody, it’s the way he is.”
Amazingly enough, Belichick’s taciturn moods still dominate Welker’s mentality to a degree.
“When I’m answering questions from the Denver media, I’m not worried about what the Broncos’ people are going to think,” Welker says. “I’m worried about what Belichick will think. Isn’t that crazy?”
That sounds about right. When the answer for just about any question is “we’re just trying to win football games,” it can be pretty hard to show emotion towards things, as Tom Brady exhibited when talking about Aaron Hernandez. Coincidentally, Welker has been much less robotic to media since he has left New England. As he can attest to, the Belichick Effect is real, and it can be pretty severe.
