Bill Belichick waited at least a day to vent, but on Monday he unleashed his true feelings about former Patriots receiver Wes Welker. He never particularly liked him when he was his star receiver and he definitely doesn't take too kindly too him now that he's on a rival's sideline. Welker's collison with the Patriots top cornerback in the second quarter ended Aqib Talib's afternoon and allowed Demaryius Thomas to grub on Manning's throws to the tune of seven catches for 134 yards and one touchdown despite being immortalized in GIF form dropping an easy pass.
Unlike Richard Sherman, the Pats cornerback kept quiet, but his head coach lit into Welker as stoicly as humanly possible for what he perceived to be a dirty pick play.
Both rivalries have been waged since before the season started and id doesn't appear that there is an end in sight for either one. When they meet in the future, this rivalry Brady and Manning will probably be the undercards. In Belichick's words, the collison wasn't an accident either. He believes Welker's objective was to take out Talib.
Via Boston.com:
“I was asked about the hit on Talib and I feel badly for Aqib,” he said in an opening statement Monday morning. “The way that play turned out — I went back and watched it, which I didn’t have a chance to yesterday. It was a deliberate play by the receiver to take out Aqib. No attempt to get open. I’ll let the league handle the discipline on that play, it’s not for me to decide. It’s one of the worst plays I’ve seen. That’s all I’ll say about that.”
Coming from the father of SpyGate, it's a bold accuation. That I'll give him.
However, why would Denver use Welker as their enforcer? Do they subscribe to the policy of it always being the one you least expect? First of all, he's Middle Earth Frodo in a land of Orcs compared to his NFL brethren. He's already got his head wrapped in an airplane black box passing for a helmet because of his history of concussions this season. If he'd put his head in harm's way that wouldn't make much sense even if you've seen the Magneto's helmet he's rocking on his dome.
As for Bill Belichick, he should probably seek coaching of his own from Sherman on how to truly make his message go viral. Once more with feeling, Bill!
No matter how he emotes, that attack on Welker's integrity wasn't the Patriot way. As Brady said about Sherman on Monday afternoon, the Patriots win and lose with wth graciousness. That's the opposite of what Belicheck exhibited.
