WATCH: The Best Recent First Round NCAA Tournament Upsets

With March Madness tipping off in earnest today, we’re sure to get some bracket-buster upsets, where lower seeds catch some wreck on their higher seeded counterparts. Here’s a quick look back at some of the best and biggest recent upsets that the NCAA Tournament has had to offer.

No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast takes down No. 2 Georgetown, 78-68, in 2013

In just their sixth year as a D-I squad, the Eagles, who were popularly known as Dunk City, gave coach John Thompson III and his Hoyas some serious work. 

Huge alley-oop for FGCU’s Chase Fieler

In the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament, Florida Gulf Coast’s Chase Fieler threw down this alley-oop to lead the 15th-seeded Eagles past the 2nd-seeded Georgetown Hoyas in Philadelphia.

No. 15 Lehigh shocks No. 2 Duke, 75-70, in 2012

Before getting busy in the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers, guard C.J. McCollum announced himself to the world by scoring 30 points, dishing out six assists and grabbing six boards as Lehigh sent Coach K’s Blue Devils packing.

No. 15 Santa Clara defeats No. 2 Arizona, 64-61, in 1993

Unless you were a hardcore hoops junkie, you probably never heard the name Steve Nash before. Well, before he became a two-time NBA MVP, he gave the Arizona Wildcats the business.

1993: No. 15 Santa Clara over No. 2 Arizona 64-61

No. 10 Davidson beats No. 7 Gonzaga, 82-76, in 2008

They might not have been a No. 15 seed, but few saw what the skinny sophomore named Steph Curry was about to get cooking in the 2008 tournament in leading Davidson on a magical run to the Elite 8. He set it off with scorching Gonzaga in the first round to the tune of 40 points. And from that point on, a growing legend was in full effect.

No. 15 Richmond upends No. 2 Syracuse, 73-69, in 1991

Billy Owens and the Syracuse Orangemen were supposed to make mincemeat of Richmond. Instead, the Spiders became the first No. 15 seed to win a game in the NCAA tournament.

No. 15 Coppin State smashes No. 2 South Carolina, 78-65, in 1997

A MEAC conference team had never won an NCAA tournament game before Fang Mitchell’s Eagles did the damn thing. Coppin State scored 38 points in the game’s final 13 minutes to secure the historic win.

No. 11 VCU destroys No. 6 Georgetown, 74-56, in 2011

Head coach Shaka Smart promised to “wreak havoc” on opposing teams when he got the job a year earlier. And in the 2011 Round of 64, he kept his promise as the Rams smoked Georgetown in rout to their unforgettable Final Four run.

No. 15 Hampton sneaks by No. 2 Iowa State, 58-57, in 2001

In its NCAA Tournament debut, Hampton shocked Jamaal Tinsley’s Iowa State crew.

Taylor Coppenrath, T.J. Sorrentine and Germaine Mopa Njila got busier than a horny rabbit!

Germain Mopa-Njila and T.J. Sorrentine hit back-to-back three pointers in overtime as #13 Vermont upsets #4 Syracuse 60-57 in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tourney. Sorrentine’s shot traveled 28 feet.

No. 15 Norfolk State beats No. 2 Missouri, 86-84, in 2012

My good friend, colleague and fellow hoops junkie Jerry Bembry had been telling me all year that Norfolk State had a supreme big man from Queens that was the real deal. When they made the tournament, he told me they’d beat Missouri. And he wasn’t blowing smoke. Kyle O’Quinn, the current New York Knick, ate the Tigers up with 26 points and 14 rebounds.

R.J. Hunter’s 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds remaining capped a comeback from a 12-point deficit and lifted the Panthers to a 57-56 opening-game victory.
