One of the most epic buzzer beaters you will ever see didn't take place in a raucous college arena or in an NBA venue. Instead, it took place in the final moments of New York's Section I Class AA championship game between New Rochelle and Mount Vernon.
With 2.9 seconds remaining in Saturday's final, New Rochelle's Khalil Edney was preparing to heave a full court baseball pass. After his pass was intercepted by a Mount Vernon defender near midcourt, it appeared that they'd come up short. However, that changed in an instant when the Mount Vernon defender inexplicably threw the high arching pass back across midcourt expecting to wind down the clock. Edney flew in, stole the ball and beat the clock with a 55-foot desperation shot.
Frenzy ensued as both teams celebrated while officials reviewed the play. After two minutes of deliberation, the officials counted the basket.
"I was just praying for it to go in," Edney told MSG Varsity after the game. "That's one of them last-second things you throw up and it goes in."
The 61-58 victory capped off a 12-1 run for New Rochelle and has turned Edney into an instant celebrity.
