Breaking news today out of Storrs, CT as the Huskies have fired head men’s basketball coach, Kevin Ollie.
According to a statement from the school, Ollie was terminated “for just cause.” While no additional details were given, CBSSports.com says the decision is related to the fact that the university is being investigated by the NCAA.
Ollie coached the team for six seasons, winning the National Championship in 2014 as a No. 7 seed. But in the last two years, the Huskies failed to make the tournament and this year finished 14-18 and 7-11 in the American Conference.
“The mens basketball program has a proud history and a tradition of excellence,” said UConn president Susan Herbst in the statement. “Our goal, above all, is to ensure we have a program that UConn Nation can be proud of, including our students, alumni, fans, and all our committed supporters.
University Athletic Director David Benedict said: “It is unfortunate that this decision became necessary. As with all of our programs, we hold mens basketball to the highest standards. We will begin a national search immediately to identify our next head coach.
