TSL Sports Talk Recap: David Steele

David C. Steele, NFL writer for @SportingNews, joined us this week on TSL Sports Talk to talk NFL. TSL Sports Talk host, Mark Gray, opened up the discussion by talking about Sunday’s Cowboys vs. Packers game, where Dez Bryant’s catch was ruled incomplete on the fourth down.

Steele on the new NFL rules regarding a completed pass:

The NFL makes too many laws… How do you legislate what is a catch, so minutely, that when you get to the end of it, it's impossible to actually make a catch? It ends up telling you that what you saw is not really what you saw because everything we’ve known football to be our entire lives tells us that dez Bryant caught the ball and that the Cowboys should’ve had the ball at the one yard line… Justice is justice and that was unjust. If a rule leads to injustice, it has to be changed. It has to be simplified.

On Peyton Manning:

If I’m Peyton Manning, I’d say, ‘You know what, I’ve got a lease on life just three years ago. I could’ve justifiably retired after all those neck surgeries and nerve damage and all the things that would say, hey, I’ve done all I can for this sport, why risk it anymore.’ He got three more really good years, record breaking years, years in the spotlight extra by continuing to play in Denver. You can’t push that for a second time. You got to know when enough is enough and walk away. Of course athletes never know when to walk away… who wants to relive the last half season of Brett Farve’s career? People were still trying to say, hey, I’ll take this Brett Farve over this player, that player, the other player until he literally had to be carted off the field and it was obvious to everyone that he was done.
