On February 27, 1992, a 16-year-old Tiger Woods was the youngest player ever to tee it up with the big boys in a pro tournament. The logical place for a star to be born was the Los Angeles Open, and it didn't hurt that Woods, the U.S. Junior Amateur champ, lived nearby in Cypress. He was already making waves around the golf world when he stepped onto the course at the Riviera Country Club. Given a sponsor's exemption into the field, Woods shot a one-over 72 in the first round. Unfortunately, he failed to make the cut, but that didn’t stop him from earning the Golf Digest Amateur Player of the Year, Golf World Player of the Year, and Golfweek National Amateur of the Year during that same season.
