The festival opened Friday with legendary rap duo Outkast bringing out a slew of guest stars such as Janelle Monae, Future and Sleepy Brown. Each came out and performed with Big Boi and Andre 3000. Jay Z popped on stage with Nas to spit a few verses during his set celebrating the 20th anniversary of his quintessential hip-hop album Illmatic. He brought Jay Z out to perform “Dead Presidents II,” while Diddy joined to rock “Hate Me Now.” And although Beyoncé wasn’t on the marquee, her appearance alongside sister Solange during day 2 was a highlight.
Bey appeared on stage without warning adorned in a black hat and a tropical dress as she matched her sister’s choreography on “Losing You” as fans rushed the stage upon realizing Queen B was in the house. Pharrell, who like Solange performed his set on day 2, brought out Gwen Stefani as his surprise, while Justin Beiber appeared as the special guest for Chance the Rapper. No holograms or explosive revelations, fans still got more than they initially bargained.
