We see athletes perform on the biggest stages across the world, blocking out everything surrounding them in their pursuit of greatness. But in our emotional state of support or ridicule as rabid fans, we often forget that these athletes are humans first and athletes second, and that they face many of the same real world problems and challenges we all sometimes face.
Today in her post-match press conference at Wimbledon, Venus Williams reminded us of this fact, breaking down when trying to discuss the accident she was involved in a few weeks ago in Florida.
After defeating Elise Mertens in their first round match-up, Williams entered the press room and was asked about the accident in which 78 year old Jerome Barson was tragically killed. After initially trying to maintain her composure, Williams broke down and couldn’t continue her reply. Williams has been found at fault for the accident and is dealing with a lawsuit by the Barson family, which is being handled by her attorney Malcolm Cunningham while she competes at Wimbledon.
But regardless of the big event at hand, we were reminded that humanity surpasses athletics and that even the great ones cannot hide from devastating situations.
