The Cincinnati Bengals Re-Sign Head Coach Marvin Lewis

Three NFL coaches had been fired already.

Ben McAdoo of the Giants was the first to go. Then the Colts fired Chuck Pagano, the Lions fired Jim Caldwell, he Bears fired John Fox and Jack Del Rio has said the Raiders let him go in hopes of getting John Gruden. Everyone assumed that the Bengals would finally be parting ways with Marvin Lewis so we turned our attention to the Broncos’ Vance Joseph and the announcement that the Cardinals’ Bruce Arians was retiring.

So of course the Bengals announced today that they were firing Marvin Lewis and….wait. What’s that? The re-signed him?!

Yes, the Bengals shook things up by announcing that they had re-signed their long tenured coach to a new two year deal through the 2019 season.

Marvin Lewis has been an important member of the Cincinnati community and the Bengals family for the past 15 years, and we are happy to have reached this agreement, said Bengals President Mike Brown. Marvin has made significant contributions during his time here. While recently we have fallen short of our expectations, we have full confidence in Marvin to re-establish winning football in 2018.

My family and I are very grateful for the opportunity to stay in Cincinnati and continue my career with the Bengals, said Lewis. My job is to win a World Championship. We have a talented roster full of veteran leaders and emerging young stars, and I am committed to making the necessary improvements to put this team in the best position to win.

His sixteen years of coaching the Bengals has earned Lewis 125 career victories, making him the winningest coach in team history.
