French Open Dress Code Targets Serena Williams Iconic Black Catsuit

The French Open dress code targets Serena Williams and her black catsuit.

French Tennis Federation president, Bernard Giudicelli, says the tournament is introducing a new regulation because he thinks that “sometimes (they’ve) gone too far.”

In an interview with Tennis Magazine, Giudicelli singled out Williams’ catsuit.

Bernard Giudicelli, the French Tennis Federation chief announced a dress code for the 2019 French Open, which includes outlawing Serena Williams catsuit. Makes perfect sense for a fat, bald, aging man to be making fashion decisions for elite athletes. #FrenchOpen #SerenaWilliams

“It will no longer be accepted. One must respect the game and the place,” he said.

Serena Williams reportedly had a practical use for the outfit, according to her it helped her with her blood clot issues. It was also dedicated to mothers.

I understand that Tennis has specific dress code regulations, but this outfit was modest. Especially compared to many of Serena’s white competitors and faux rivals. This feel like another instance where Williams’ has unwillingly become part of a tennis narrative while being used as a scapegoat to suppress her influence and downplay her dominance both on and off the court.
