HBO is falling off. Remember back in the day when you used to get hype to see a slugfest on HBO? Well, unless its Canelo Alvarez vs. GGG, it ain’t hitting on the Box nowadays.
Rewind to Danny Jacobs unanimous decision win over Maciej Sulecki this weekend. Jacobs laced the sparse Barclays Center crowd with a full-on Prince Hakeem from Zamunda meets King T’Challa from Wakanda set. Replete with African dancers, a Kendrick Lamar song from the Black Panther Soundtrack and donning a kufi, Jacobs enhanced the full Black Panther effect delivered by his teammate Jarell “Big Baby” Miller’s previous walkout entrance.
PRITTY LEFT HOOK 2: HBO v. Showtime / Jacobs v. Sulecki Recap / Spence v. Carlos Ocampo
Rhett keeps it real as usual and breaks down HBO’s ring girls (little booty) vs Showtime’s (big booty), Danny Jacobs almost catching the ‘L’ against Sulecki, and Errol Spence making fools come to Dallas to see him now
Still, in relation to a Showtime Sports boxing experience at the Barclays Center, the nullifying effect of the stale DJ and horribly irrelevant Matchroom Boxing U.K. focused highlight reels, the event got unlit real quick.
Sulecki was a dog that Jacobs had to take his time to tame. The guy was all aggression, a point-and-shoot style fighter. He was smothering from the opening bell and didn’t let up the pressure until Jacobs began dangerous exchanges and brilliant execution in continually outpointed his opponent.
The margins on the three scorecards were 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112.
Jacobs is now a mandatory challenger for Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, the unified middleweight champion who defeated Jacobs via a controversial decision in March 2017.
With Canelo Alvarez tentatively scheduled to fight GGG during Mexican Independence Weekend Day in September 2018, Jacobs might entertain a bout with Jermall Charlo, whom he recently had some static with backstage at the Barclays Center.
Regardless, if Jacobs wants that Brooklyn love that puts women in gaudy furs and guys Gucci down to the socks into the expensive seats, then you got to get on the Stephen Espinoza bandwagon of Hip-Hop or bust.
Eddie Hearn, the U.K. based promoter for Jacobs, needs to also remember that in Brooklyn, even Conor McGregor gave props to Jay-Z, so play your position and get with the culture like Migos.
