The second season of Donald Glovers seminal, surrealist sitcom Atlanta is upon us. The Robbin Season subtitle is affixed as a not-so-subtle hint to the lavish laughs, honest imagery and human-centered storytelling were in store for. While the rest of the world celebrates holidays in a carefree manner, denizens of certain urban areas are filled with trepidation.
Because, in a capital based society, those who have not often feel the need to step outside of societal norms to accomplish short term goals. In essence, to rob, and to be robbed, is a greater likelihood in these areas than elsewhere during the holidays. Things like law, morality, ethics and honesty go out the window when any means are used to justify the desired end.
Generally, aint shit funny about getting robbed. However, as they did during the first season, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Stefani Robinson will bring that same the kind of honesty and cleverness to this multifaceted offering; which is equal parts hilarious, ridiculous and sincere.

“Atlanta: Robbin Season begins by focusing on characters who arent of the main cast and appear to have no connection to them whatsoever. However, in the wandering storytelling style that wowed us in the first season, the connections are eventually made. If youre not paying attention to the dialogue, the facial expressions, and even the seemingly unimportant people, you could miss a lot. Comedian Katt Williams appears as Earn’s cousin.
But, you see, Donald Glover is a smart dude. Yes, I know that goes without saying, but it also bears repeating. These arent laughs for the sake of laughs. Atlanta: The Robbin Season is look at the manner in which systemic racism and oppression causes confusion, uncertainty, hunger and, ultimately, larcenous behavior.

During the first three episodes, Al (Brian Tyree Henry), Darius (Lakeith Stanfield) and Earn (Glover) appear, but arent the center of the story. It looks as though theyre trying to show how Earn and company arent unique or special relative to those with which they share space with. They are one part hilarious, one part tragic, but only exceptional in that we know more about them than the others due to their exploits last season.
This season, the hood and all of its relative traps, snags and pitfalls are given a canvas upon which to delightfully dance and exist for their own purpose, as if they are characters of living flesh and blood.

The powerful part about Earn that many missed last season, perhaps in part to how engrossing the storytelling was, is that Earn isnt a hero at all, nor is he a villain. Hes just a regular brother who often takes the path of least resistance in avoiding being shot, robbed, locked up or otherwise disenfranchised.
When we recall a show like The Wire, urban crime is illustrated as deliberate, organized and enterprising. With The Robbin Season, Glover and company show how criminal activity in the hood often isnt even a conscious decision. Generally, when somebody comes up with a money-making scheme, and youre broke as a joke, your ethics and morals take a backseat to getting that money. It’s hard to think about the future when your stomach is rumbling louder than your thoughts.
“Atlanta: The Robbin Season” premieres on FX tonight at 10:00. The ten-episode season is certain to make us convulse, either with laughter or revulsion, at these images gleaned from the petri dish of black existence in depressed urban areas.
