Spike Lee did the right thing in Brooklyn by throwing a block party Saturday. Smack dab in the hood, on the Bed-Stuy block where his classic Do the Right Thing filmed 25 years ago, right at the corner of Stuyvesant and Lexington Avenue, Spike Lee and the 40 Acres and a Mule film family threw a party.
They set up stage with the booming system vibrating louder that Radio Raheem’s speakers throbbed in 1989. They brought on a few of the borough’s hottest DJs like Scratch, Dj Spinna, and DJ Parler. And then there were invited friends, celebrities like Wesley Snipes, Dave Chappelle, Yasiin Bey, Erykah Badu and the legendary Chuck D converged on stage, in front of a crowd of thousands, and rocked.
Starting at noon and going til 6pm, the last Saturday in June came to a perfect Brooklyn end with peace, love, and the reverent memory of a film that still inspires and moved us to nod our heads 25 years later – Do the Right Thing.
