We highly suggest this fascinating piece on the difficulties of interacial communication amongst deaf Americans.  As it stands with many low-visibility minority groups, people with special needs are often relegated to tertiary considerations by the mainstream. Of course, it makes sense that the hearing-impaired would have cultural subsets just like anyone else, but can you honestly say you've ever thought about it? Society can make us cold and calculated, but stories like this really bring things back into perspective. The things we take for granted are astounding aren't they?
