San Diego Comic Con Drops Bombs with Comic Book Movie Trailers

The San Diego Comic Con has come to an end and, as in years past, it had plenty of premier peeks at some of the best comic book-based science fiction offerings in film and television. Some are abbreviated look-ins at some of the most highly anticipated cinematic offerings in the business, while others give us an idea of what to expect from some of our favorite ongoing series as well as some creations that we’ve all been chomping at the bit to see come back on the scene.

Here’s a look at some great trailers that premiered at the world’s largest comic book convention.

Wonder Woman

A film for Wonder Woman is long overdue. Although its production was only announced a few years back, it seems like it was a thousand years in the making. Imagine a superhero movie in which the protagonist is a woman who did not need or want to be rescued? Well, Warner Bros. imagined it and said offering is slated for release in 2017. Check out this “boss” trailer and you be the judge.

Justice League

The Justice League are comic book royalty. Batman, Superman, Aquaman, the Flash and, of course, Wonder Woman have been kicking butt and taking names in the DC comic book universe for 70 years or so. However, it’s only now that Marvel Comics’ offerings have been so thoroughly dominating the movie landscape that someone decided to take a shot at a Justice League movie. Produced by Batman V. Superman directer Zack Snyder, Justice League may be the most highly-anticipated comic book-based film to date. Side note, I’m personally hating the fact that there’s no Green Lantern. He’s a founding member of the Justice League in the comic book.

Suicide Squad

Originally appearing in The Brave and the Bold back in 1959, the Suicide Squad can only be described as a work release program for the superpowered and criminally insane. The film version is slated to debut August 5 and was written and directed by David Ayer. The cast is led by Will Smith, perhaps the most celebrated Black action hero of all-time,who stars as Deadshot, Jared Leto is the Joker, Margot Robbie stars as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnman is team leader Rick Flagg, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje plays Killer Croc and Viola Davis as the powerful and manipulative government attache Amanda Waller. Most of these characters have some connection to Batman. So, you know the Bat will make an appearance here and there.

Dr. Strange

The trailer for Marvel’s Dr Strange looks absolutely mind-bending. There are no words to do it complete justice. You’ll have to judge for yourself, but I think it’s awesome.

Luke Cage

Netflix has been doing the dog-on thing as far as its comic book offerings are concerned. Daredevil and Jessica Jones have been smacking the taste out everybody’s mouth since their respective premieres. Continuing down that road, Netflix just released the trailers to the next three series at SDCC; Luke Cage and Iron Fist – who combined to form the comic book duo Power Man and Iron Fist, and Marvel’s oftentimes forgotten superhero team, the Defenders.  The caveat is that the Defenders trailer doesn’t actually show any footage from the show that is slated to drop next year.

Iron Fist

The Defenders

Not to be out done, the CW dropped its trailers for the upcoming season 3 of The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season 2, and season 5 Arrow, respectively.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Season 2

Arrow Season 5
