Phil Mickelson had never won The Open. In fact, Mickelson had only finished in the top ten of The Open championship twice before. Then Sunday, starting the day five strokes back, Mickelson shot a blistering 66 to win his first Open championship and the fifth major of his career. He called it "probably the best round I ever played" and said he "putt certainly better than I ever putted."
Lefty sat at his press conference with the silver claret jug beside him. He said it felt "amazing."
Lee Westwood, who began the final round with a two stroke lead, fell behind for good with a bogey on the 13th and although briefly threatening with a birdie on the 11th, Adam Scott inploded with three bogeys on the last four holes. Henrik Stenson finished second.
And then there's Tiger Woods. He never found his groove. He started the round in the best position to win a major in five years and ended up shooting a 74. The chase for Jack Nicklaus' major record continues.
