Episode four of Game of Thrones’ seventh season is titled Spoils of War. The plot lines that have been floating around since the show’s very first episodes are coming closer and closer together.
Arya is home and Jon Snow and Danaerys Tagrayan are politicking. But a war is raging. The Stormborn is on their heels after losing Dorne, House Tyrell and half of her fleet was when Euron Greyjoy attacked.
Arya Stark, the little girl that left Winterfell has returned and there’s a scene in which she gallops her horse atop a hill and stops, the silhouette of Winterfell looming in the distance. Oh, what a beautiful site. After some resistance from a bumbling pair of guards, Arya reunites with sister Sansa, who soon finds that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to her baby sister.
Game of Thrones: Season 7 Episode 4: Brienne and Arya (HBO)
Watch a clip of Brienne and Arya dueling in “The Spoils of War.” Game of Thrones airs on HBO on Sundays at 9.
Sansa witnesses Arya exhibit the skill and technique of a Bravoosi waterdancer in a sparring duel with noble knight Brienne of Tarth who once defeated the mighty The Hound in swordplay. Sansa and the slithering Petyr Baelish watch in amazement as she confounds and frustrates mighty Brienne.
Is Brienne holding back? Is Arya as amazing as she seems?
Sansa simply cannot be certain, but what she is certain of at this point is that her sister is really good at killing.
The scene changes and we find a group of Lannister soldiers disembarking from their victory over House Tyrell at Highgarden. Suddenly, the sound of thousands of hooves could be heard echoing in the canyons miles away, but getting closer;
“Spears and shields!” yells Jamie Lannister, a would-be picture perfect Disney prince if it weren’t for, ya know, that other thing.
The Lannister forces frantically amass. The score was a droning crescendo of tension as hooves galloped over a hill toward their lines. It was the barbarian hordes of the Dothraki!
The Lannister forces tremble as the sound of the thundering hooves grow closer and closer.
“I think we can hold them,” says Sir Jamie.
His confidence in his own forces is shaken to the core when Danaeyrs rides into the fray atop mighty Drogon. For the first time in centuries, a dragon rules the battlefield over Westeros and it was a beautiful site to behold. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust…and that’s all I’m gonna say about that.
Jamie Lannister is such a conflicting character; he’s noble, loyal, fair, brave…but is having an incestuous affair with his blood-thirsty, mad sister.
