Demetrious Johnson’s History-Chasing Win Will Wait Until Another Day

Fans waiting to see UFC flyweight champion, Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson break the record for the most title defenses will have to wait a little bit longer. Johnson’s UFC 215 opponent, Ray Borg, was diagnosed with an illness that will sideline him from tomorrow’s planned championship less than 12 hours before weigh-ins.

According to multiple sources, Borg (11-2) has been battling an illness this week and was deemed unfit to fight by UFC doctors. According to published reports, Borg’s illness was unrelated to his weight cut, sources say.

The UFC released the following statement:

Due to a viral illness to UFC flyweight contender Ray Borg, the main event bout against champion Demetrious Johnson at UFC 215 has been cancelled. Borg was deemed unfit to compete by the UFC medical team.

UFC 215, which is now headlined by the womens bantamweight championship between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko, will proceed as scheduled with 11 bouts at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Canada. Moving to the Pay-Per-View main card will be the flyweight bout between Henry Cejudo and Wilson Reis. Additionally, the Mitch Clarke and Alex White lightweight contest will now kick off the FS1 prelims.

With the removal of Johnson vs. Borg, customers may request a full refund of purchased tickets at point of sale.

Johnson (26-2-1), is the pound-for-pound king on many people’s rankings and is currently tied with Anderson Silva for most consecutive UFC title defenses at 10, and would have taken sole possession of the record with a win at UFC 215.
