Boxing: Canelo  Alvarez vs. Liam Smith

Saul Canelo Alvarez faces WBO super welterweight champion Liam Smith.

The Mexican star will take on the Brit in Texas friendly territory as Alvarez has fought and won two times already in the state. Memorably in 2015, he flattened James Kirkland in the third round in highlight reel fashion from Minute Maid Park in  Houston.

Before that he took Austin Trout the distance in 2013 at the Alamo Dome to win a decisive unanimous victory.

However you slice it, Alvarezs U.S. image towers over Smiths, even though the Brit is the current WBO super welterweight champion.

The low-key champion has been on a eight-fight KO run since 2013. Coming from a family full of fighting brothers from the tough town of Liverpool, to say that Smith has no chance to keep his belt would be a preposterous statement.

But when you look at the level of super welterweights Canelo has run through, like Shane Mosley, Josesito Lopez and Kermit Cintron, to not say there is an expertise gradient that is lacking on Smiths part would be an understatement.

The big question is how long will Alvarezs promoter, Oscar de la Hoya, continue to dodge the fights fans really want to see, namely, Gennady GGG Golovkin.

Catch all the championship action live from the AT&T Center in Dallas, Texas on HBO PPV at 9pm EST / 6pm PST.
