The 78-year old comedian was released from custody after posting $1 million bail. He’s due to return to court on Jan. 14th and his legal team released a statement discrediting the motives of the DA while maintaining Cosby’s innocence.
“The charge by the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office came as no surprise, filed 12 years after the alleged incident and coming on the heels of a hotly contested election for this county’s DA during which this case was made the focal point,” Cosby’s attorneys said in a statement released after his arraignment Wednesday. “Make no mistake, we intend to mount a vigorous defense against this unjustified charge and we expect that Mr. Cosby will be exonerated by a court of law.”
Cosby was investigated for allegedly sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, a former women’s basketball coach at Temple University in 2005. The case was settled out of court in 2006 until Constands’ legal team accused Cosby of violating the terms of their confidentiality agreement, which led to the release of full transcripts from his sealed deposition.
The statute of limitations in the Constand case was set to expire in January 2016.
