BETs Boomerang sequel is a go as it secures Oscar-winner actress Halle Berry and Emmy-winner Lena Waithe to executive produce the networks 10-episode straight-to-series comedy.
The project was initially described as an updated version of the 1992 Eddie Murphy and Robin Givens hit, but the half-hour comedy is now being described as a sequel.
The series will follow the lives of Jacquelines son, and Marcus and Angela’s daughter as they attempt to step out of their parents shadows and make a name for themselves.
In the original film, Givens starred as Jacqueline, Murphy played the role of Marcus and Angela was portrayed by Berry.
Waithe will co-write the pilot alongside showrunner Ben Cory Jones, whos worked on shows such as Underground and Insecure, and Dime Davis, who’s worked with Waithe on Showtimes drama The Chi.
“This is less of a reboot and more of a continuation of the original story, Waithe said. Theres no point in trying to remake a classic. It cant be done. So, we want to create something fresh that speaks to a new generation. We hope people will come to the show with an open mind and ready to embrace the new world weve created!
Boomerang was among the first pickups for Scott Mills, who replaced longtime BET exec Debra Lee as president of the cable network back in December. A premiere date for Boomerang has not yet been determined.
