Angela Bassett, Idris Elba, Kerry Washington Receive Emmy Nominations

Some of today's top black actors and actresses, including Angela Basset, Kerry Washington, Idris Elba, Don Cheadle and Cicely Tyson, are amongst this year’s Emmy Award nominees.

Washington received her second nomination for her role in "Scandal" in the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category, while both Idris Elba ("Luther") and Chiwetel Ejiofor ("Dancing on the Edge") are up against each other in the Lead Actor in a Mini-Series or Movie category.  "Luther" is also nominated in the Writing for Mini-Series or Movie or Dramatic Special category. Don Cheadle landed a nomination for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in "House of Lies". "Scandal" actor Joe Morton was nominated for Guest Actor in a Drama series for his role as Rowan Pope.

Angela Bassett is being recognized for her role as Marie Laveau in the FX horror series “American Horror Story: Coven” with a nomination for Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie. Veteran actress Cicely Tyson was also nominated this year in the Lead Actress in a Mini-Series of Movie for her role in the Lifetime film "The Trip to Bountiful".

“Orange is the New Black” actresses Uzo Aduba and Laverne Cox are both nominated for Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.

"Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley" also received a nomination for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.

The 66th Annual Emmy Awards celebrating the best in television this year will take place August 25, 2014 in Los Angeles and will be televised live at 8 ET/5 PT on NBC.
