The attorney hired by the family of an unnamed female Florida State student who made rape accusations against Heisman Trophy candidate Jameis Winston said via press conference that the State Attorney General's office should launch an investigation into the way the Tallahassee Police Department handled her client's case.
"The bulk of the investigation was into the rape victim," Patricia Carroll said. "I'm looking at an investigation of a rape victim, not a rape suspect."
The AP reports that Ms. Carroll said the lead detective assigned to the case received a search warrant for her client's cell phone and social media accounts, but did not request the same thing from Winston or the two individuals who were present during the incident.
The attorney called the integrity of the TPD's investigative efforts into question, saying their efforts to interview witnesses and perform DNA tests were insufficient and that multiple errors were made on their part. She also said any discussion of a civil suit against Winston was "premature." So what's the holdup then? Perhaps waiting on the NFL draft. What's the statute of limitations on such things? One does wonder. On Dec. 5, State Attorney General Willie Meggs announced the investigation by his office into the case would not result in Jameis Winston being charged and that the case was closed.
