Crime in New York City went up 3 percent last year, but the city would have seen a decrease in crime without a rise in the theft of Apple products. Fortunately, the computer and technology giants may have a solution.
It's been dubbed the "kill switch," though it's actually known as Activation Lock, and makes phones unusable once an Apple ID and password have been entered from a remote location. The technology can also be used to simply figure out where you left your device.
"We think this is going to be a really powerful theft deterrent," said Craig Federighi, a senior vice president at Apple. Activation Lock will be available on the new iOS 7 in September.
