Whether it's his ABC reality show or his courtside antics, right now Mark Cuban is more prolific at garnering pub than Dirk Nowitzki is at dropping buckets.
His latest plea for attention involves his interest in drafting Brittney Griner.
Via ESPN.com:
"If she is the best on the board, I will take her," Cuban said before the Mavs' Tuesday night game against the Los Angeles Lakers. "I've thought about it. I've thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I'd lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it's not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it."
Griner would love the opportunity. "I would hold my own! Lets do it." she wrote on Twitter on Tuesday night in response to Cuban.
Aside from the intrigue, she would have a zero percent chance of success in the League. The physicality of the NBA would be too daunting for her. She’s a 6-8 post player that weighs just 207 pounds. Kevin Durant is shaped like a popsicle stick compared to most NBA forwards, but he weighs in at 235. That's a 28 pound difference and Griner likely won't be able to pack on much muscle.
Drafting a woman isn’t unprecedented for an NBA team, but it is extremely unorthodox. It hasn’t occurred since the NBA whittled the NBA Draft down to two rounds.
In 1968, Denise Long was the first woman ever drafted into the NBA; however, she was taken in the 13th round. In 1977, Lucia Harris became the second woman drafted and three years later Ann Meyers was invited to a three-day workout.
