Canelo Alvarez “can’t stop, won’t stop” when it comes to chasing championship greatness in boxing.
On Wednesday, at the World Boxing Council (WBC) convention in Mexico City, the four-division world champion revealed through his trainer that he wants to chase another title in a fifth division.
Cruising To The Top
Alvarez now wants to move up to cruiserweight and challenge Ilunga Junior Makabu for his WBC cruiserweight title.
However, it is only the next step for a fighter who is showing the next generation how to maximize your value for the fans and the business in an unforgiving sport.
‼️ Canelo Alvarez’s trainer/manager Eddy Reynoso has announced at the WBC convention that Canelo wants to move up to CRUISERWEIGHT and challenge WBC champion Ilunga Makabu in his next fight in May. The WBC have approved this, so Canelo will fight to become a five-weight champion.

Late last year, Alvarez said he would become the first undisputed world champion at super middleweight (168 pounds). He accomplished this goal in eleven months and four fights. In the process, he took the undefeated status away from then WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders with an eighth-round stoppage.
Saunders’ return to boxing is seriously in danger from the multiple vicious injuries to his eye socket.
Canelo Alvarez vs Ilunga Makabu is pure insanity… and Canelo has genuinely just asked for it… and had it approved by the WBC. Won his first title at 154lbs, was undersized when jumping from 160lbs to 175lbs and will now challenge a champ who competes at 200lbs. What a man.

Undisputed
Then Alvarez took away Caleb Plant’s “0” with an eleventh-round stoppage to become undisputed.
However, his decision to leave promoter Golden Boy Promotions and become a promotional entity and free agent changed the game.
Canelo Alvarez Broke The Levees To Face Biggest Challenge In Callum Smith
In 2018, Alvarez signed a $365 million deal for 11 fights licensed by subscription streaming service DAZN. Golden Boy orchestrated the deal.
However, COVID-19, plus other factors regarding matchmaking, delayed Canelo’s activity and the fighter decided to take a pivot from the norm. Alvarez filed a suit, replete with 11 complaints, including breach of contract, negligent interference, and fraud.
Bossing Up
According to reports, the legal documents requested a jury trial, stating that both DAZN and his promoter Golden Boy Promotions, headed up by Oscar de la Hoya, have “broken the promises they made to each other, Alvarez, and boxing fans.”

Since then, Alvarez has done short-term deals with promoters and broadcasters with the best fights available. From Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Sports to Al Haymon and Premier Boxing Champions, Alvarez plays well with others.

Now in the post-Mayweather era, Alvarez is showing the next generation of boxers how to become businessmen and stay on the top of the game. By announcing his intention to move up to another weight class for yet another title, Alvarez is looking to match Floyd Mayweather, Jr., a five-weight-class world champion.
The Next Level
However, Alvarez would surpass Mayweather technically if he wins a title at cruiserweight, since Mayweather never became an undisputed world champion. The closest Mayweather came was his fight against Manny Pacquiao, where he won the WBO, WBC, and WBA welterweight world titles.
Mayweather never fought Kell Brook, who was the IBF champion at the time. However, he is the greatest boxer-businessman of all time, and the fight against Pacquiao is the highest-selling pay-per-view of all time.
As of today, Canelo is the top draw in boxing. He is in a position to reach even bigger heights in the game athletically. Although he is missing a doppelganger athletically and in popularity as Mayweather had in Pacquiao to challenge his PPV record, Alvarez is on a path as a brand and athlete to continue to make boxing history.
